As part of its advocacy to educate the public on the news and journalism, the Newseum displays the Top Ten Front Pages at its Washington building daily.

The selections are made from more than 800 newspaper front pages sent to the Newseum daily by publishers. The Newseum also carries all the front pages on its website – newseum.org

According to the Newseum website, “the selections for the Top Ten are at each of the daily editors’ discretion and may focus on the headline, photos, innovative design or something else that elevates the front page above the rest.”

In February the Cape Times front page that featured an article headlined “Arrest Max Price” was exhibited alongside the world-renowned The Guardian newspaper from the UK and the National Post from Canada.

Last week’s front page which made it to the Top Ten was headlined “Doctor probed for alleged ‘fleecing’”. The page also featured a picture of President Jacob Zuma and Arts and Culture Minister, Nathi Mthethwa, unveiling the Delville Wood Memorial in France. The unveiling was to mark the centenary commemoration of the battle, but also to correct a historical wrong. Black South African soldiers who fought in the battle were not buried along their white counterparts. But this had been corrected over the past two years.

“We are very proud of editor Aneez Salie and the Cape Times team for being recognised by such a prestigious institution. They’re flying the Independent Media flag high," said Executive Chairman, Dr Iqbal Survé.
