The weekly newspaper, which will be produced in South Africa and on sale on the continent every Friday, is part of a fully integrated multi-media platform, implementing Independent Media's "digital first and print best" philosophy.

African Independent is the latest in a series of product launches from Independent Media, as the group repositions as the leading provider of news and in-depth analysis in print and digital platforms across the African continent. "I believe that we are making great progress toward creating the Independent Group of the future, from a print legacy company to one that has embraced the digital age. As a proudly African media company, the launch of African Independent is our contribution towards changing the narrative on the continent. We are also delighted that advertising for the title is showing advanced growth", said Independent Media executive chairman, Dr Iqbal Survé.

The digital revolution has fundamentally changed the way people live. It has also changed the way in which readers access, interact and consume news. This is why African Independent is different. It is a designer product specifically addressing discerning readers' needs and fitting into their lifestyles. African Independent gives readers the best of both worlds, with 24/7 immediacy on its digital platform as well as insightful, thought-provoking content to reflect upon when readers read the print edition.

African Independent's strong online presence will ensure that readers are kept abreast of events on the continent, as and when they happen, thus giving them the full picture of the African landscape, be it news, economic developments, lifestyle, entertainment or sport. It is the go-to site for people interested in Africa.

The newspaper is a modern 48-page tabloid available every Friday, and discusses the news events of the past week in further detail for an in-depth analysis.

African Independent editor, experienced and respected journalist, Jovial Rantao, who is also the president of The Africa Editors' Forum and chairman of the Southern African Editors' Forum said, "Our newspaper is of interest to decision-makers in Africa, and provides the African consumer with balanced, fair and trusted content - keeping readers informed and updated with trending news topics that impact their lives positively," said Rantao. "We shall cover Africa like it has never been covered before. We seek to change the narrative about Africa. Our ethos determines a less conventional, but more inclusive, news offering, which gives readers the best credible narrative of the continent."

African Independent is printed in Johannesburg and will be distributed in South Africa and countries in Africa including Angola, Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The newspaper has a cover price of R20 in South Africa and in the other African countries it sells for the equivalent of $2.20 in their local currencies.
